vinyl in second hand shops in London or
New York. It stands for quality and excitement.
Let's see Steely Dan's Can't buy a Thrill
was just out. Inner Visions was around. We had What's
Going On from Marvin Gaye, The Velvet Underground
were going into recess and The Beach Boys had struck a new chord
with Holland. Carla Bley had produced Escalator over the Hill and
Steve Reich was on his way with Four Organs.
Yes, that's what it means to me. I was aware of Nixon
and Vietnam, Belfast, Arsenal, Georges Best, The Odd Couple, Mary
Tyler Moore but I will always contextualise a year by its Music
and 71, 72, 73 were golden years.
I try to forget the greyness, the beginnings of football
violence, the dull monotony of a southern English comprehensive
education, the shops closing on the second of
5.30pm, the suspicion that older people seemed to hold for any
non white resident.
Let's just remember the music.

d'or.
J'essaye d'oublier la grisaille, les débuts
de la violence au football, la terne monotonie d'une longue éducation
dans le sud de l'Angleterre, les boutiques qui
ferment à 17 heures trente pétante, les suspicions
que les personnes plus agées semblent porter sur tout résident
qui ne soit pas blanc.
